When the House Democrats went to court July 10 to defeat the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), nearly one third of the party including a number of Florida representatives kept their names off of the legal filing.
The brief urged a federal appeals court to strike down DOMA and 130 Democrats joined House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s argument that DOMA disadvantages gays and lesbians and should be found unconstitutional.
60 Democrats did not sign onto the brief, including Florida's Corrine Brown, Kathy Castor and Frederica S. Wilson. However, all three of them have signed on as co-sponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill pending in Congress to repeal DOMA.
No Republicans signed onto the legal brief.
DOMA limits federal recognition of marriages to those between one man and one woman.
