Miami Gala raises more than $100K
The Equality Florida 2011 Miami Gala surpassed its goal of raising more than $100,000 to support the efforts of Equality Florida. More than 250 people attended the event at The Webster on March 20. The Voice for Equality honorees were Elizabeth Schwartz, LGBT attorney; George Sheldon, who was director of the Department of Children and Families when Florida's ban on gay adoption ended and Ellen Freidin, who led the Fair Districts Campaign. 

Murder suspected indicted
The man accused of killing two Wilton Manor residents in December 2010 was indicted by a grand jury March 23. Peter Serge Avsenew, 26, was charged with the murders of Stephen Duane Adams, 52, and Kevin Mark Powell, 47. He is charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, unlawful use of a credit card, and grand theft auto. Avsenew is being held without bond in the Miami Dade County Jail.
