People from around the country”and the globe”come to Tampa's Moffitt Cancer Center for its groundbreaking treatments in battling the disease it addresses in its name. And the large complex continues to wow patients with its inclusion and care of all people and their families.
Moffitt earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families from The Human Rights Campaign last month. HRC named Moffitt a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” for 2012 on its Healthcare Equality Index.
“We’re thrilled to see Moffitt Cancer Center recognized for its commitment to workplace
diversity and for treating all patients and their families with the same level of respect and
professionalism,” said Brian Winfield, managing director for Equality Florida.
Moffitt is one of only two cancer centers named nationally. In Florida, it's one of a select group of three hospitals/hospital systems comprising 10 healthcare facilities to receive this designation.
The recognition is given to hospitals with policies and protections that meet four core criteria for equitable care.
“This recognition speaks volumes to Moffitt's commitment to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer for all, regardless of their race, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, culture or background ,” said Dr. B. Lee Green, VP of Moffitt Diversity, “Cancer is color-blind, fluent in every language and can impact anyone.”
A press release from HRC said that Moffitt also supports an environment that values and fosters diversity, development, and growth opportunities for its employees by offering employee networks, voluntary, employee-initiated and led networking groups open to all employees. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance at Moffitt (GLAAM) is Moffitt's first employee network with more than 40 members.
GLAAM's mission is to reinforce Moffitt Cancer Center's image as an Employer of Choice through its community outreach efforts, increasing access and providing education to the community about cancer and its impact on diverse cultures and communities.
