So, I had this whole “new angle” on the Michael Jackson stuff planned, when I realized that people talking about MJ was probably the first time in my young life that I had ever heard anyone use the word “gay.”
But when I attempted to flesh that idea out, I realized, that’s really all there is to it. It’s possible that in a strange way, MJ was an accidental LGBT activist because people in the 80s, uncomfortable with his gender-bending style, labeled him as gay, and kids like me, hearing that label, asked, “Mom, what goes gay mean?” and thus, a generation is educated.
Or maybe not.
I’m behind. Deadline week hit last week and all the things I wanted to share with you began piling up so I’m going to do the cop-out thing: a round-up. Here are the things I’ve been reading that have jumped out as interesting, old to new.

Why LGBTs should speak up on healtcare reform.
An engineering professor is treating her husband, a loan officer, to dinner for finally giving in to her pleas to shave off the scraggly beard he grew on vacation. His favorite restaurant is a casual place where they both feel comfortable in slacks and cotton/polyester-blend golf shirts. But, as always, she wears the gold and pearl pendant he gave her the day her divorce decree was final. They’re laughing over their menus because they know he always ends up diving into a giant plate of ribs but she won’t be talked into anything more fattening than shrimp.

Speculation about my former place of work – is South Florida’s top LGBT media in trouble? I’ll believe it when I see it.
And, HBO to develop Middlesex as a TV series. I haven’t yet read the book, but the central themes are relavent to the LGBT community and it’ll be interesting to see whether they’re handled with the high quality, as per HBO’s reputation, or clumsily, as per the entertainment industry’s history on these “alternative” topics.
