Florida home to nearly 6,800 same sex couples

Nearly 6,800 same sex couples call the Sunshine State home.

That's according to newly-released U.S. Census figures based on how many gay couples checked the “husband” or “wife” options. 3,585 of those are same-sex female couples and 3,199 are same sex male couples.

The Census bureau also reported an estimate of the number of same sex couples in Florida, both married and unmarried, at 48,456. In all of the United States, 131,729 same sex couples reported themselves as married.

This is the third time the Census has counted gay couples but the first since same sex marriage has become legal in some states. Of course, Florida is not one of the states that recognizes gay marriage.
