History lovers in Hillsborough County have a new advocate in their corner. In December, GaYbor District Coalition president and MC Film Fest co-owner Carrie West was named to the Hillsborough Historical Advisory Board by Ken Hagan, chairman of the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners.
“I am pleased for the appointment,” said West. “Just six months ago the commissioners looked away in what was going on in historic Ybor City and didn't want to sign the proclamation for Ybor City's annual GaYbor Days during the 4th of July. Now they seem to say, “Wow.' It is a very positive Hillsborough County economic story.”
In July 2011, only two county commissioners signed the proclamation celebrating GaYbor Days, which highlights the economic impact of the coalition in the historic area of Tampa. West's position on the board is a three-year appointment and Hagan credits the former City Council candidate's historically conscience past.
“I cannot adequately express to you the importance the county places on your participation,” Hagan said in a letter to West. “Your caliber of membership is outstanding and your service invaluable.”
The county's Historical Advisory Board consists of seven members”one member each from the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City and our appointed by commissioners. Its mission is to support and facilitate a uniform historical marker program throughout Hillsborough County.
It also provides the BOCC with support that complements the goals of historical preservation and education throughout the county.
West and the other board members will meet quarterly.
