Tips for Tweeka
Hair stylist John Barber is best known for his antics as “Tweeka Weed”—the outrageous drag character he created years ago. Tweeka has performed at numerous high profile events, including Beach Ball and Come Out With Pride, always with a twinkle in his eye that suggests he’s as surprised by his antics as we are. Barber was recently diagnosed with Sinonasal Carcinoma Cancer. He’s undergoing aggressive radiation and chemotherapy and is optimistic for a full recovery. Over the years Barber has raised thousands of dollars for local charities, and now his friends want to do the same for him at a Sunday, Jan. 23 fundraiser at Stardust Lounge, 431 E. Central Blvd. The event lasts from 3-7 p.m., and show time is at 5. Not surprisingly, Barber hopes there’ll be enough money to start a fund for others who may have difficulty paying necessary bills during a period of illness.
Friends Return
Dennis McCormack and Joe Bettes have moved back to Orlando, and lots of people are happy to see them. For years, McCormack was manager/bartender at the iconic Full Moon Saloon, a bear bar next door to the Parliament House. In 2005 he and partner Bettes opened Friends, a casual dining hangout on Mills Avenue known for good food at good prices. After three successful years they closed up and moved to Fort Lauderdale. And now they’re back, surrounded by, well, friends. You can find McCormack tending bar at the Bear Den—the cozy man’s bar at the back of the Parliament House.
Self-Abuse
Just when you thought every sex-related malady has been unearthed, it turns out some men may have an allergy… to their own sperm! According to the Journal of Sexual Medicine, those with “post-orgasmic illness syndrome” experience flu-like symptoms immediately after they ejaculate that can last for up to a week. If you think you have it, try a skin-prick test using a diluted form of your semen. If symptoms develop, go to the store and buy lots of Kleenex.

Kudos to three members of the Watermark family. Former account executive Erica Franco’s new restaurant in Apopka, Garden on Park, received a glowing review in the Orlando Sentinel. Contributor Stephen J. Miller’s 7 Sonnets was part of the Playwrights’ Round Table at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center. And as a way to distract attention from his 44th birthday, contributor Scottie Campbell held a “Suckerpunch to Hunger” event for Hope & Help of Central Florida’s food bank.
