Spurs has last hurrah as GameWorks closes shop
Video games are no longer available and LGBT country dancing has once again left Ybor City. The once popular video game Mecca GameWorks closed its doors abruptly on Monday, March 29 and Spurs Country Bar had one last party on March 27. After the corporate office announced several closings nationwide GameWorks in Ybor never opened its doors on March 29. According to Valerie White, director of sales, the reasons behind why the Centro Ybor anchor was chosen are unclear. “We don’t have any definitive answers,” she told us. “The company just decided to close a few branches and we were one of them.” Fans of Spurs turned out to say goodbye to their favorite night spot on March 27 with a karaoke party. Owners announced that the bar was sold, but details as to who purchased the property and what the future holds for it remain unclear. Spurs is the second LGBT country bar to die in Ybor City. Wranglers closed back in 2007.

Oh, those Sisters

The Tampa Bay chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is at it again—and this time they’re at Sawmill. The not-so-lovely white-faced nuns will celebrate their fifth anniversary of giving back to the LGBT community with an annual Wig Drive April 9-12 at the Dade City campground. According to President Sister Muffdiver, the drive is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and each year the drive gets bigger. The event also marks the one-year anniversary that the Tampa Bay Order received its Full Status in the International Order and its 501c3 status. We suggest if you see one of the nuns, offer a congrats and a thank you! Who knows, you may walk away with a brand new condom!

James’ resignation has people talking

Founder and president of Securing Our Children’s Rights, Cathy James, sent out an e-mail in late March that has people buzzing. The Florida Together Federation board member resigned her position because she didn’t want her “personal opinion to distract from the wonderful work” of the organization. She continues on to share her disillusionment with Equality Florida, saying it works in a vacuum. “EQFL should be building coalitions within the LGBT community and with allies outside the LGBT community.” James adds that other groups feel unauthorized in obtaining LGBT equality because of Equality Florida’s overbearing influence.
