CLEARWATER, Fla. | “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” will create a world that celebrates truth, beauty, freedom and above all love at Ruth Eckerd Hall April 1-5.

Based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” opened on Broadway in 2019 with songs heard in the film blended with iconic pop tunes from the past 17 years. The story surrounds a young man who becomes infatuated with a singer at the Moulin Rouge club in Paris 1899.

At the 74th Tony Awards, the musical received a total of 14 nominations and won 10 awards, including Best Musical and Best Choreography.

Jordan Vasquez, a swing in the show, says “Moulin Rouge” is fitting for this current time as its themes are about acceptance and love. He says anyone and everyone is welcome to “Moulin Rouge.” He shares that the musical’s message is rooted in the freedom to be who you are meant to be.

He is an understudy for multiple roles and will be performing April 1-3. Since things can always change in the theater, Vasquez will be available for the final performances in case anything happens to another role. There will be seven performances during its showing.

The story, across both movie and musical, emphasizes that the greatest joy is learning to love and be loved, and that alone embodies acceptance.

Vasquez has also performed in “Chicago,” “The Full Monty,” “Head Over Heels” and “Cabaret.”

He says the community doesn’t want to miss what the team will bring to Ruth Eckerd Hall as they have received great responses on tour so far. The musical is a “mash-up” style, incorporating popular music from the film alongside newer hits from the last 20 years; Vasquez says the music has grown and audiences can expect new songs.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” plays at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater through April 5. Tickets start at $52 and are available at RuthEckerdHall.com.
