“Changing the Game,” a documentary filmed in 2019 and released this year, journeys into the lives of three high school athletes at different stages of both their athletic and personal lives as transgender teenagers and is now available to stream exclusively on Hulu.

The film follows track runner Andraya Yearwood from Connecticut, who is able to compete on the team of the gender she identifies as; skier Sarah Rose Huckman, who lives in New Hampshire where what team she plays on depends on whether she has had gender confirmation surgery; and Mack Beggs, a wrestling champion in Texas who must compete according to his sex assigned at birth rather than his gender identity.

“Changing the Game” follows the teen athletes, not only giving a look into each of their personal lives but also looks at how each of them are able to perform in the sport they love while dealing with varying levels of transgender rights laws in each of their states.

While filmed in 2019, “Changing the Game” was released on Hulu for LGBTQ Pride Month and carries a rare 100% Rotten Tomato score among critics.

“Incisive about the complex issues involved and emotionally compelling, this documentary might help clarify the rules so the game can be changed,” wrote the Boston Globe’s Peter Keough.

indieWire’s Jude Dry wrote “‘Changing the Game’ goes beyond those dehumanizing headlines to show the real people affected by harmful anti-trans policies or lack of any meaningful legal protection.”

“It tries to get so many different perspectives in. It’s so emotional, personal, and complicated, and there are no easy answers, but I appreciate that this film exists to at least inspire the conversation,” wrote Christy Lemire of FilmWeek.

“Changing the Game” is rated TV14 and is available to watch with a Hulu subscription.
