“Tis the season”already
Halloween has blown past us and we're eyeballing Thanksgiving”so it's not too early to get into the giving spirit of the Holidays. Participants in ASAP's Second Annual Santa Speedo are already actively campaigning for sponsorship dollars on Facebook and Twitter. A few others are more old-fashioned and hitting up friends”in person”for cash donations. Regardless of how the money is collected, it goes to an important cause, to benefit ASAP's Brighter Seasons for Children program. This year's run returns to Gulfport on Saturday, Dec. 17, and is once again a mile-long fun run. A larger crowd of speedo-clad men and women is expected this year, so if you're not participating, sponsor a runner and come see the eye candy and decorative swimwear for this amazing community event. Speaking of running”¦
Time is quickly running out to register for the Tampa Bay Red Ribbon Run at Lowry Park Zoo. The run is actually three activities in one”a 3K fun run, a one-mile run and virtual run”raises money to support Metro Wellness and Community Centers and The AIDS Institute. This year's run is on Dec. 1, which is World AIDS Day, at 6:30. Opening ceremonies will be hosted by Hillsborough County Commissioner and WAVE-winning politician Kevin Beckner and emceed by Fox 13 meteorologist Andy Johnson. That crazy preacher is”¦wait, that's not him
Every weekend the crowds that descend upon Ybor City are verbally assaulted by a street preacher who warns of eternal damnation. Think of the St. Pete Pride protestors but without the heat and the bright sun overhead. During this year's Halloween weekend, however, Ybor City was turned on its heel when one of GaYbor's own went out dressed as the aforementioned preacher”complete with signage and bullhorn. Ryan Clements of The Bricks had locals fooled for awhile with his spot-on imitation.
