A pastor shorn
It looks like Rev. Phyllis Hunt of Tampa's Metropolitan Community Church is going to get a new hair do. To raise money for the church, the popular pastor and Watermark columnist has agreed to let the congregation decide the fate of her hair. She and congregant Vilia Corvison, have both agreed to cut 10 inches off of their hair or have it shaved based on which style receives the most donated funds. The fate of the hair is determined by which team raises $7,500 first. As of press time, giving the two women a new style is leading the shaven look by more than $1,000, but there is still a long way to go for the battle. No matter the winner, the hair that is cut (or shaved) will be donated to Locks of Love, which uses real human hair to make wigs for children who have lost their hair during cancer treatments. Orrell leaves American Stage
For eight years, Andy Orrell has served as the media liaison for the American Stage Theater company, scheduling interviews and introducing reporters to directors and cast members of the company's many shows. However, in an e-mail sent to reporters on Aug. 1, the Director of Marketing announced that he was leaving his post to pursue new opportunities. He didn't share details on his departure but there is little doubt that he will be missed.
Locals shine at Talent Quest Florida
More than 200 singers took to the stage of the Doubletree Westshore Hotel the weekend of July 29 to compete for the Talent Quest Florida title and a chance to represent the state on a national level. Local performer Jeremiah Pagan, who also performs as Miah, won the men's pop division. Pagan qualified for the contest at Hamburger Mary's in Ybor City and will now travel to Laughlin, Nev., to compete for a national title and a $3,500 cash prize.
