While gay couples celebrate their newly minted marriages in New York, leaders on both sides of the issue are making moves in states where same sex marriage is explicitly prohibited, including Florida.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is launching a bus tour of some of those states, to promote equality and empower LGBTs to become advocates for their civil rights. “On the Road to Equality” will kick off in Salt Lake City Aug. 12 then head east before wrapping up in Orlando Oct. 28 30.
“We are in the midst of a cultural tipping point on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues and our job is to push the scale as far and as fast as we can toward fairness,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “The tour will serve as a powerful visibility tool and support the work of creating real and lasting change in these communities.”
The 12 week tour will travel to 17 cities in 11 states. Every state where the tour stops has passed discriminatory constitutional amendments to ban marriage for same-sex couples.
In addition to exhibits held on the bus, the HRC will also offer a variety of workshops and educational seminars with particular emphasis on workplace and healthcare equality, schools, bullying issues and religion.
