They Like Us, They Really Like Us
On July 14, Orlando Weekly published its annual Best Of Orlando Awards for 2011. Voted on by Weekly readers, Watermark came in third place for “Best Local Publication' behind Orlando Weekly and the Orlando Sentinel. This marks the first time the LGBT publication has placed in the top three. In addition, Weekly staff gave a special nod to Watermark's newest monthly event, Movies OUT Loud, with a Writer's Award for “Best Example of Talking Over a Movie Being a Good Thing.' “Our gay stepsister has turned the tables on cinematic rudeness, placing the talking-out-of-turn at center stage while some of Hollywood's biggest disasters play out before your very eyes,” Weekly touted. Movies OUT Loud is hosted every second Thursday by comedian Jeff Jones and Orlando drag legend Miss Sammy.
Parliament's Power Hour
Fridays beginning July 22, Parliament House jumps on the networking social bandwagon and plays host to a happy hour geared toward business professionals. Parliament House owners Don Granatstein and Susan Unger, along with Michael Wanzie and bartender Joel Gran, are working together to create a comfortable end of week gathering spot for those with a bit of life experience and business-savvy individuals in our community. The Office Party boasts a “new happy hour vibe being created with the business professional in mind;” business attire, half-price drinks, relaxing music, complimentary Office Party hors d’ oeuvres and giveaways.
DJ Maximus Gets Back Doored
Revolution Nightclub's July 21 installation of Back Door Bumby will feature Miami Based DJ/Producer and record label owner DJ Maximus. For his third appearance in Orlando, Maximus will share the decks with Orlando favorites DJ Joanie and JB Burgos alongside performances by Shantell D’Marco and Watermark WAVE winner Macaviti. Revolution’s monthly Thursday night party, spearheaded by Blaze Adonis presents and hosted by Lady Guy Disco Diva, is one of the hottest monthly installations in the club’s history. DJ Maximus can be seen weekly at Living Room Nightclub in Fort Lauderdale.
Orlando's Got Talent
Former Dandelion Communitea slinger turned folk singer, Dani Shay has made it into the top 48 acts on the NBC show America's Got Talent. But it wasn't just the singer's voice that impressed the judges; the 23 year-old lesbian possesses an uncanny resemblance to teen pop sensation Justin Beiber. “I didn't know who he was until people told me,” Shay told the Orlando Sentinel. Embracing the coincidence, Shay quickly became an internet sensation, parodying Beiber's songs.
