When asked point blank, Florida's new department of Children and Families (DCF) chief said he has no plans to relaunch the fight against gay adoption.
Gov. Rick Scott appointed David Wilkins to head the DCF in January. Orlando Sentinel columnist Scott Maxwell had a conversation with Wilkins following an announcement that the DCF would cut 500 jobs, and the topic turned to the state's overturned ban on gay adoption. Wilkins told Maxwell that the issue isn't on his or the governor's radar and added, “We need good parents. And there are a lot of gay parents doing a good job.”
Gov. Scott had announced during his campaign that he supported Florida's gay adoption ban, which was later ruled unconstitutional.
Wilkins also discussed his plans and goals after the budget cuts, saying his focus is on protecting kids and streamlining the DCF, while creating an agency where frontline workers are motivated to work.
The DCF budget is $3 billion, 4% of Florida's total spending.
