Like a huge jpeg opening on a dial-up computer, details about Gay Days Weekend 2010 events are downloading slowly but with increasing clarity. We’ve known for a while that GayDays.com will relocate their huge operation to the Doubletree Resort. The 28-acre complex will play host to an expo, pool parties, film festival, bear events and comic performances by Michele Balan, Vicki Shaw, Alec Mapa, Bear and Jeff Jones. But most are waiting to see what will unfold with the big nighttime parties after promoter Johnny Chisholm was unceremoniously booted from Disney properties last year. It appears that it will be “back to the future,” and many are breathing a sigh of relief. Respected event planner Mark Baker is touting a slate of events at MarkBakerEvents.com that harkens back to Gay Days Weekend glory days. Announced parties include “Grind” on Thursday night at the House of Blues and “Fascination” on Sunday night at Hard Rock Live. As for Chisholm, who is battling several lawsuits over unpaid Gay Days Weekend bills, his OneMightyWeekend.com web site states simply: One Mighty Weekend 2010, information coming soon. GayPartyBlog.com recommends a wait and see approach to buying tickets, but Baker has a solid reputation and it’s possible that once announced his hotel will book quickly.
Eastern Migration for LGBT Orlando?
Word is spreading that a big new bar is opening on the underserved east side of Orlando. The lakefront location for “Mister-Sisters” is the former Drive Time car dealership on East Colonial Drive, a block from Rooms To Go near Semoran Boulevard. According to owner Brian Humphries, the huge (12,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor space) bar will open in late February or March. Handsome Humphries tended bar at the Parliament House for 10 years, and has only good things to say about the experience. “It was a great run, and I learned a lot,” Humphries said. “I love them to death.” When we spoke with Humphries, he was finishing construction on a second location for WAVE Award-winning Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria. The new Pom Pom’s is also in East Orlando at 12275 University Boulevard near UCF. “I’m spreading a little Pom Pom’s love,” says owner Pom Moongauklang. The grand opening is, well… any day now.
