I can’t read notes and I don’t know what key I sing in. –Patsy Cline
In the second installment of Monday Ripples, we take a look at some of the good being done by celebrities. I’ve always thought that being able to cool things like this would be the best part of being rich and famous. Also, I would be invited to Elton John’s Oscar party.

Gulf oil spill: Kevin Costner donates ‘Ocean Therapy’ invention to clean oil from sea; BP OK’s tests
I have this love/hate thing with Kevin Costner. I don’t much care for him as an actor (or even as a personality), but he is in some of my favorite movies. Now, however, it is revealed that he is working on something that will endear me to him forever. He had his brother, Dan, have been working on a way to clean oil spilled into seawater since the Exxon Valdez disaster 1989. Kevin’s company will be working with BP to test the gizmos on the current oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. I hope it works; this mess breaks my heart and makes angry.

Look to the Stars: The World of Celebrity Giving
Let’s face it, you might not devour the National Enquirer, but you are influenced by celebrities. That’s okay, isn’t it? To see someone who admire living life in a way we would like to gives us goals and gets us through our recession-saturated day. This site acknowledges the power celebrities have for us and helps you find out what causes your favorite star supports. It’s also kind of fun to see which stars really rock at giving back – take a look at Ellen Degeneres and Elton John, for example.
He’s Oliver It!
Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution
Did you get a chance to watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution? It originally aired on ABC, but you can still watch it on Hulu for free! In the series, Jamie goes to Huntington, VA to try to help them change their eating habits, particularly in schools. Such an inspiring thing to watch a well-known person try to accomplish good and face challenges; it’s a lesson in politics, creativity, and perseverance. (It also doesn’t hurt that Jamie is charming and easy on the eyes.) Jamie continues his mission to change the eating habits and encourage cooking skills through this website. You can even sign a petition that will be delivered to President Obama.
Absolutely Shameless
Best of Orlando
On one hand, I think it is kind of gross to solicit your vote for Orlando Weekly’s Best of Orlando. Then, on the other hand, I figure the more people who know about the blog, the more good stuff we’ll get a chance to do. Make sense? So vote for Scottie Saves the World for Best Blog! I’m also running a fun campaign to get Orlando actor Doug Ba’aser the Best Experimental Act title, simply because he’s one of my favorite people.

What a Bicycling Paradise Looks Like
A bonus ripple to share a fun video from the Utne Reader of a city in the Netherlands where there is a whole lot of bicycling going on. It made my heart happy, I hope it does the same for you.
