Florida-based athlete injured at Gay Games

An Orlando-based athlete suffered some injuries after he crashed his bicycle during the triathlon at the Gay Games in August.

Hector Torres, 32, was scheduled to participate in the triathlon, 10K run, the 5K run, the marathon and three cycling events. However, the crash put an end to his gold-seeking appearance. Torres is the head coach for Tri Peak Athlete and the Central Florida YMCA. He competed at the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago.

Overall, the Cologne Gay Games were deemed a success by organizers and more than 10,000 athletes from 70 countries around the globe.

Notably, Kei  Koizumi, who handles budgetary and policy issues in the Obama White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, took the gold medal in the men’s 40-44 110-meter hurdles and silver in the triple jump.

Gay Games VIII officially closed on Aug. 7 after Cologne’s vice mayor Elfi Sho-Antwerpes gave an emotional speech thanking all participants to the city before the flame was extinguished. Gay Games IX will be in Cleveland, Ohio in 2014.
