Just a quick post to alert you guys to a follow-up to a story Watermark ran last year, on LGBT presence in the gaming world. Turns out Xbox’s controversial decision not to allow any variation of “gay” in gamertags has been reversed.
It’s hard to think that a big corporation has LGBTs best interest at heart, but the world of online gaming is well-known to be shockingly casual in slinging the word “faggot” and other homophobic behaviors. I could be wrong, but based on who I spoke to and what they told me, I really felt like Xbox’s across-the-board ban on gay stuff in gamertags was intended to be a protective barrier against a new variation of the anti-gay pattern.
The problem arose when everyone realized that meant gay gamers wanted to be identified as such and were told they couldn’t.
I generally share this space to share other interesting stuff I’ve been reading but we’ve been so slammed busy here at Watermark I haven’t had as much time as usual to read and research. Stratosphere party planning is in high gear, we’re challenging ourselves to write a better newspaper every two weeks (and I’d say we haven’t been doing bad) and I’ve been stretching to reach personal goals regarding both the quality of this website and how it’s promoted. Oh, and I’m trying to buy a house. Exhausting!
I will say that if you haven’t checked out the latest Orlando Overheard, you should take a second and do that. Rich, disgruntled Grayson supporters! Patty Sheehan imposter! It’s so freaking juicy.
Wait, there is one thing I almost forgot about. I’ve only read one excellent essay from this series about a woman who makes her living writing porn but I can’t wait to read more. If you beat me to it, be sure to tell me what you think.
