Above average number of gay couples in Sunshine State

Florida has more same-sex couples within its borders than the national average. The Economist published a chart tracking the number of gay couples living in each state. The national average is 4.7 couples per 1,000 households.

Florida boasts about 5 gay couples per 1,000 couples despite a number of anti-gay laws, including bans on gay marriage and adoption by same sex couples. That discrepancy is highlighted in The Economist’s reporting of trends found within the chart, noting that usually, states where gay marriage is legal or where same-sex partnerships are recognized have a higher proportion of same-sex couples than the national average.

The District of Columbia had the highest concentration of gay couples with 14 for every 1,000 households.
